Iranian Physician to be INCB President

Vienna : Iranian Physician Hamid Ghodse was elected President of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) in Vienna on Tuesday during its current 92nd Session, which will last till May 30.

According to the UN Information Service, Hamid Ghodse, since his membership of the INCB from 1992, was eight times elected as the Board`s President in 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005 respectively.

The Board will review the global supply and demand of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances for medical purposes. It will also discuss the increasing problems of chemicals used in the illicit manufacture of drugs as well as other narcotics-related problems at the current Session.

Senior officers of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will also address the Session.

The Vienna-based Board is an independent body, established by the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs to monitor and support Government compliance with the international drug control treaties.
