Jerusalem : Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is set to be put on the grill by police again later this week, over the latest bribery suspicions against him, local daily Ha’aretz reported on Tuesday.
Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld announced Tuesday that investigators from the National Fraud Unit will question the probes-laden leader Friday morning, the second time since the fifth investigation against him emerged earlier this month.
Olmert is suspected of having taken envelopes full of cash from American businessman Morris Talansky before he became the prime minister, State Prosecutor Moshe Lador told the Supreme Court on Monday in the most detailed account of the case so far.
Olmert has denied any wrongdoing, saying that he would resign if indicted, said the report.
The Supreme Court is yet to decide whether to sustain a lower court’s decision to hold a pretrial deposition of Talansky scheduled Sunday, an arrangement which would harm the prime minister’s chances for a fair trial, as claimed by Olmert’s lawyers.
The prosecution upheld the testimony, arguing that the American businessman, both as a key witness and as a suspect, would likely not return to Israel in the future.
