Mumbai : The demand for power in India is increasing at an annual rate of 8-10 percent, central power ministry secretary Anil Razdan said here Wednesday.
Addressing a conference on Key Inputs for Indian Power Sector for 11th Plan and Beyond, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Razdan said if India was to be envisaged as the manufacturing hub for augmenting power capacity, “then the country needs 80,000 MW of power during the 11th plan, which roughly translates into 20,000 to 25,000 MW every year”.
He said that projects for 9,600 MW have already been commissioned while “66,000 MW are under construction and 11,000 MW are under captive sector”.
On the issue of conservation of energy and related emissions, Razdan said: “Though India’s per capita energy emission is lower as compared to many developed countries, we should adopt energy intensive practices in all sectors”.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) chairman Rakesh Nath said the government was looking into the pre-qualification requirement for new industry players and the CEA “was preparing a national electricity plan for 12th and 13th Plan periods”.
