Jerusalem : Renewed peace talks between Israel and Syria will not come at the expense of the ongoing negotiations with the Palestinians, Israeli daily Ha’aretz quoted a senior official as saying on Wednesday.
“The government remains committed to pursuing both the Syrian and Palestinian tracks,” said the Israeli official, shortly after the Jewish state confirmed that indirect Israeli-Syrian talks are underway with Turkish mediation.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat welcomed the Israeli-Syrian talks, saying “we want to reach a comprehensive peace and therefore we support talks between Israel and Syria.”
Israeli and Syrian officials have been holding talks since Monday in Ankara under Turkish auspices, Ha’aretz reported, adding the resumption of the talks which previously collapsed in 2008 received mixed responses from Israeli lawmakers.
