JMI’s career planning centre gets Rs 1 crore grant from Union govt.

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia’s (JMI) Centre for Career Planning and Coaching was recently granted Rs 1 Crore from the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs for providing career guidance and coaching to 100 students from minority groups.

According to a press statement released by JMI on 21st May, the Centre was so far running on a grant by the UGC for providing the above facilities to students from OBC, SC, ST and minorities.

The Centre was set up in 1984 under a scheme of the UGC for providing coaching for the competitive examinations to students belonging to weaker sections amongst the educationally backward minority communities. The Centre also provides guidance in choosing a career by gauging a student’s aptitude and coaching facilities for central and state government services, public and private undertakings, banks, etc as well as engineering, medical, management, computer science courses, etc., said the statement. The Centre also offers short courses for proficiency in typing, shorthand and secretarial courses.

The university has expressed its pleasure over the success of JMI student Mohammad Pervez Alam in Civil Services 2008 examination. Alam took coaching for the Civil Service Exams at JMI’s Center for Career Planning and Coaching. His rank is 21st. Miss Bushra of this Center has also topped the West Bengal Judiciary Service of 2008. This year the university enrolled 40 students for training for various exams.
