Malaysia will soon appoint a labour attaché at the Malaysian High Commission (embassy) in Chennai, the capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, to look into the recruitment of workers.

“I have assured the Indian government that their citizens who come to Malaysia as workers will be treated well and given the same rights as other workers,” he told reporters after holding talks with visiting Indian Minister of Communication, Information and Technology, A. Raja, here Wednesday.

It was reported that the Indian Cabinet has already given its approval for the signing of the MoU, which will benefit unskilled and semi-skilled Indian workers the most.

“Mr Raja had expressed concern over the alleged cases of abuse involving Indian workers in Malaysia and I explained to him the true picture and what action was being taken against those who abuse their workers,” he said.

He said the Indian government had formed a council in Chennai to advise potential workers on the working environment and other related matters in Malaysia.

On another matter, Dr Subramaniam said collaboration would be established between Malaysia’s skills development centres run by his ministry and leading technical and skills training institutes in India in training Indian workers to become skilled and semi-skilled.

He said that with this arrangement, Malaysia would be able to source only skilled workers from India.
