Kuala Lumpur : Malaysia’s parliamentary opposition made a political point by attending the birthday party of the daughter of Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf) chief P. Waythamoorthy at Parliament House.
Six-year-old W. Vwaishhnnavi blew the candles on her birthday cake at the parliament lobby Wednesday together with some 30 Hindraf supporters and MPs. Another opposition MP present was Indian-origin N. Gobalakrishnan, The Star newspaper said Thursday.
The function was attended by Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, leader of the Opposition and wife of former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim who leads the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat.
The occasion was also utilised to demand the repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA) under which five top Hindraf leaders have been detained for organising a protest rally last November.
Waythamoorthy, who toured many countries, including India, after the controversial rally, is now based in London.
He alleged last week that his Malaysian passport had been revoked by the government although it was valid till 2010.
Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has said there was no truth to claims by Amnesty International that the government had revoked Waythamoorthy’s passport.
