New Delhi : After three days of thundershowers and rain that clogged storm-water drains, disrupted traffic and generally threw normal life out of gear, bright May sun broke over Delhi Friday, bringing relief from the wet spell.
The city has already received over 105 mm of rainfall in May, which is a record six-year high for the month, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The last time Delhi recorded the highest rainfall of 129.3 mm in May was in 2002.
The maximum temperature in Delhi Friday was 33.5 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 21.2 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal.
The weather in the rest of the country was somewhat cool as the rains and thundershowers continued in different parts of the country.
The cyclonic conditions that had developed in Rajasthan and in the adjoining areas of Pakistan still persist and may bring rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, southern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, the weatherman said.
The Indo-Gangetic plains will also receive widespread rainfall accompanied by squall due to the cyclonic condition in the north-west, the weather office said.
Rains and thundershowers are forecast in Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Delhi until Monday.
Same weather conditions are forecast in Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal and the north-eastern states
A low-pressure area that had developed over the east Arabian Sea has extended to Maharashtra and Kerala. By Saturday and Sunday, a low pressure is likely to form over the south-west Arabian Sea, according to Friday’s evening bulletin of the meteorological department.
Thundershowers are expected in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa and the Lakshadweep Islands.
