By Xinhua,
Pyongyang : The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Sunday welcomed a deal reached by Lebanon’s rival factions in their bid to ease the country’s 18-month political crisis.
The deal, brokered by the Arab League on May 21 in the Qatari capital Doha, showed that the Arab people could solve their problems by themselves, the official news agency KCNA quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying.
The DPRK will continue to support their efforts in this regard, the spokesman added.
The Doha agreement calls for the creation of a unity government and the election of army chief Michel Sleiman as Lebanon’s new president.
Under the accord, the Hezbollah-led opposition secured veto power in the new government after having seized large swathes of west Beirut from their Sunni rivals in sectarian fighting.
