Kuala Lumpur : The National Fatwa Council has been urged to issue a fatwa (religious ruling) on the use of Quranic verses in ringtones for mobile phones as they could be incomplete when answering calls, thus changing their meaning.
Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia executive secretary Nadzim Johan said the sanctity of the Quranic verses should be protected and respected and used at appropriate places.
“We hope the council would issue a fatwa on the matter as it could smear the sanctity of the verses.
“Quranic verses in ringtones can be downloaded easily at mobile phone shops even by non-Muslims who do not know their meaning,” he told Bernama.
He was commenting on a fatwa banning the use of Quranic verses in ringtones for mobile phones issued by the Saudi Arabian Muftis Council recently.
Jamaah Islah Malaysia Organisation president Zaid Kamaruddin called for the banning of the ringtones as Quranic verses should be listened with a pious mind and not be a subject of ridicule.
