Ahmedabad : Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Gujarat police Rajnish Rai was Sunday held guilty of copying in a law degree examination and was declared failed in all subjects.
J.J. Patel, one of the five members of the Gujarat University Reform Committee, said that the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer appeared before the panel around Sunday noon and was grilled for about an hour.
The committee found him guilty under university rules and awarded him the penalty of F+0, which means he has failed in all subjects he appeared for.
He can appear for examination next year, Patel said.
An invigilator at the Siddhartha Law College, Gandhinagar, had April 25 seized a foot ruler Rai had brought to the exam hall as “something was scribbled on it”.
Rai’s answer sheet too was taken away though he was allowed to write again after half an hour.
The officer denied he was caught “copying” and said that the charge was false. The ruler in question had been scribbled on by his six-year-old son and it had nothing to do with the first year LLB examination he was appearing for.
Rai, known in police circles as an upright officer, made headlines when he arrested IPS officer D.G. Vanzara and others for the staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh here in 2005.
