Subodh Gupta in Asian top ten with $1.2 million at Christie’s

Hong Kong : New Delhi-based Subodh Gupta was the sole non-Chinese artist to break into the top ten Asian contemporary works sold, with his “Saat Samundar Paar (10)” (Across the Seven Seas) fetching $1.2 million at the Christie’s Asian Contemporary Art Evening Sale here over the weekend.

Auction records also fell for individual artists from across Asia, including Indonesia and South Korea.

Of course the highlight was a work by Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi that sold for $9.5 million on Saturday, a new auction record for an Asian contemporary artwork, at auctioneer Christie’s first evening sale of such art in Hong Kong.

Among the 27 Indian works, Subodh Gupta had the highest bid .Another work by Gupta went for HK$5,031,500 ($647,801) .Atul Dodiya’s “Woman From Kabul” went for HK$1,447,500 ($186,364).

Jitish Kallat’s much touted “Rickshawpolis 9” went for HK$1,567,500 ($201,814) while Anju Dodiya’s “Circus of Insomnia” went for HK$967,500 ($124,565). T.V.Santosh’s work went for HK$1,447,500 ($186,364).
