The central and western parts of Kansas were hit by at least 17 tornadoes Friday alone, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

Two people have been confirmed killed by the tornadoes in Kansas. Their bodies were found in a car in the town of Pratt in south central Kansas, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department.

The storm Friday destroyed several buildings and left at least six people injured, including one hospitalised in serious condition, Watson said.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from Kansas. One person was killed and a dozen were injured by tornadoes in northern Colorado.

A 15-carriage train derailed in the gale in the town of Windsor, which was ravaged by a large tornado.

Tornadoes also ripped through northern Oklahoma Saturday, damaging several buildings. No injuries have been reported so far.
