Beirut : At least 10 people were wounded in overnight clashes at Beirut between pro-government Sunni and opposition Shiite supporters, local An-Nahar daily reported Tuesday.
Clashes broke out on late Monday in Corniche Mazraa area of west Beirut when Shiite supporters from Hezbollah and Amal Movement paraded the streets of Sunni neighborhood following the speech of Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah on the “anniversary of the Liberation and resistance,” said the report.
Following verbal insults and throwing stones, the fight developed into gun shooting, it added.
Saudi Arabian TV Al Arabia said that there was no political motive behind the incident.
Future TV, mouthpiece of Sunni majority leader Saad Hariri said16 people were wounded, while hospital sources said 18 people were wounded.
The Lebanese army were deployed in the area and cordoned off some areas Monday night after the incident, said the report.
This is the first incident following the election of a new president Sunday, and hours after the president Michel Suleiman moved to the presidential palace in Babbda.
An agreement reached in Doha between these groups secured the election of Suleiman after six months of presidential vacancy.
The agreement also included the formation of a national unity government with veto power to the opposition, and a new election law.
