Pakistan govt supports China in quake relief efforts: minister

Islamabad : Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Tuesday said that Pakistan government was supporting China in its efforts for provision of rescue and relief to the victims of earthquake in Chinese province Gansu.

She was talking with media persons on the occasion of seeing off a mobile surgical team comprising Pakistani doctors and paramedics, which left for China from PAF Chaklala Airbase. The mission also carried tons of medicines and foodstuff.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui and Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lt Gen (Retd) Farooq Ahmed Khan were also present on the occasion.

Relief goods have been sent on special directives of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Sherry Rehman said that the mission would augment medical relief activities in earthquake-hit areas in China to provide relief to the affected people.

She said Pakistani’s assistance is a humble contribution and an effort to support its time-tested friend in its time of need.

She said Pakistan has already sent relief goods and it was ready to contribute more if Chinese government required more relief goods.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui thanked the government and people of Pakistan for showing solidarity, support for sending medical mission besides relief goods.

He expressed his gratitude over the provision of 22,000 tents by Pakistan and welcomed the decision by the Government of Pakistan to send the medical team to China for relief and rehabilitation.

It may be mentioned here that Gansu province of China was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale on May 12, which killed thousands and left many thousands homeless.
