Dhaka : A high court bench dealing with bail applications of politicians and officials charged with corruption has asked their lawyers to seek relief from “Almighty Allah”.
Rejecting a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mujahid, seeking bail, judges Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Ataur Rahman Khan Tuesday advised Mujahid’s counsel to seek justice from Allah.
The New Age newspaper quoted the judges as saying that the Appellate Division had barred the high court from hearing any bail petitions under the Emergency Powers Rules.
The apex court had April 22 set aside a high court ruling that declared as illegal the invoking of the Emergency Rules by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in prosecuting former ministers, lawmakers and officials in as many as 19 graft cases.
The corruption cases are part of a drive by the interim government against politicians and officials. About 200 high profile people accused are involved.
