Dubai : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) based charity Dubai Cares has announced a joint venture with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to launch primary education programmes in Sudan, WAM news agency reported Thursday.
The two organisations plan to build new school facilities, renovate damaged school buildings, train teaching staff and provide educational supplies in southern Sudan.
The programmes are expected to benefit around 700,000 children in the next ten years.
“Along with Unicef, Dubai Cares is highly optimistic about delivering tangible results and helping Sudanese children realise their potential,” said Reem Al Hashemi, minister of state and chairperson of Dubai Cares board of directors.
“Every child in Sudan has the right to a quality education which will provide them with the tools to develop a stronger, healthier, more prosperous Sudan. By investing in education, we are investing in the foundations of Sudan’s long-term development,” said Ted Chaiban, the Unicef representative in Sudan.
