Chennai : “Unbridled inflation and equally unbridled acts of wanton terrorism” have marked the Manmohan Singh government’s tenure, AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha said Thursday.
“The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s fifth year in office could not have had a more disastrous start. First came the Jaipur serial blasts (of May 13 in which 61 people were killed). Then the electoral verdict in Karnataka (in which the Congress was defeated Sunday),” Jayalalitha noted in a statement.
Alleging that the UPA government “allowed terrorism to thrive”, Jayalalitha also attacked Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s economic policies leading to the high inflation rate.
Terrorism has “shattered the morale of the law-abiding citizens of this country”, she said, adding that a “weak-kneed government” had “sacrificed the national interest to cling on to power”.
“There is a common thread linking these two problems (inflation and terrorism)”, Jayalalitha said.
“A spectre called economic terrorism” was being encouraged by the UPA government which let “foreign investors hide their identity under a sub-account by making use of participatory notes to route their investments, often running into hundreds of crores.”
What is sad is that the UPA has shown a distinct lack of spine in combating both terrorism and “economic terrorism”, she said.
The government knew that “terrorists are parking funds in Indian ventures. Yet the finance ministry has done nothing about the system of P-notes, which gives terrorists the additional benefit of anonymity while making hefty investments in the Indian market, which could later be used to fund terrorist activities against people in India,” Jayalalitha said.
She noted that National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan had last year warned of terrorist outfits manipulating stock markets to raise funds for their operations.
“Narayanan’s remarks clearly proved that the central government was aware that terrorists were parking funds in Indian ventures,” Jayalalithaa said
