Kabul : A town overrun by Taliban militants was recaptured by Afghan troops last night, officials said on Saturday.
Afghan troops launched an operation last night and the militants reliquished control of the Rasheedan district and fled the scene, said a provincial police chief.
The Taliban had captured Rasheedan Thursday night.
Brigadier General Khan Mohammad, police chief of Ghazni province, said the Afghan government was in control of the district now.
The police chief would not say if there were casualties as a result of the clashes.
However, a Taliban spokesman said they had voluntarily vacated the district centre after burning the official record, the offices of the district headquarters and several official vehicles.
Zabeehullah Mujahid said there was no pressure on Taliban and they left the area voluntarily.
However, he did not speak of the policemen captured by the militants during attack on the distrit centre Thursday night.
Mujahid had earlier said that they had captured eight policemen, including a senior police officer.
Ghazni province is located some 90 miles south of Afghanistan’s central capital Kabul and most of its districts are considered as strong bases of the anti-government Taliban militants.
