Patna : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the police to submit a detailed report in the case where a Dalit man was tied to a tree and beaten to death by some other Dalit men at a village in Bihar’s Samastipur district following a row over money, an official said here Saturday.
NHRC is likely to send a team to probe the case.
A day after a hue and cry was raised over the incident, NHRC asked the Samastipur Superintendent of Police Surendra Lal Das to submit a detailed report.
Das said Saturday that a team of the NHRC is likely to visit the village Sunday to probe the case.
The incident took place Thursday in Dhaneshpur village in Samastipur, about 80 km from here. The victim was identified as Lakhendra Paswan, 35.
The victim’s brother told the police that 10 Dalit men killed Lakhendra after he asked a neighbour, Shankar Paswan, to return the money owed to him.
‘Mob justice’ is widespread in rural Bihar. Over three dozen lynching incidents were reported last year and many more may have gone unreported.
