Lucknow, May 31 (IANS) Janata Dal (United) president and former central minister Sharad Yadav Saturday appealed to the central and Rajasthan government to amicably resolve the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Gujjar community.
Yadav, when questioned at a press conference here, refrained from taking a stand on the issue.
He said the four years of the United Progressive Alliance rule had pushed the common man to the brink.
“The country’s facing the worst price rise in the last eight years and the government had simply expressed its helplessness over it,” he said.
Yadav demanded that the Special Economic Zone law, which allows the government to acquire any land, should be scrapped. He said: “All states except Bihar have been trapped in the SEZ rush.”
He said that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s ambitious Ganga Expressway project, proposing to link Greater Noida with Ballia, and would prove an environmental disaster for the already dying Ganga river.
He said that “instead of addressing the issue of drought in Bundelkhand region, the central government and the Mayawati government were engaged in mud-slinging against each other”.
