Intelligence official, militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul : Gunmen on a motorbike killed an intelligence officer in the city of Kandahar on Monday evening, and US-led coalition troops killed two militants while a civilian was injured in an ISAF firing on his vehicle in southern Afghanistan, security officials said, Tuesday.

Afghan and coalition forces killed two militants in Mewand district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, a coalition spokesman said on Tuesday.

The joint force was conducting a search operation when they were engaged by militants using small-arms fire. The combined force responded and killed two militants, he added.

Separately, a civilian was injured as ISAF troops opened fire at a vehicle speeding towards them. The incident happened in Sangin district of Helmand province on Monday, an ISAF statement said here.

The injured man was treated at the ISAF medical facility and was then taken by helicopter to Camp Bastion for further treatment.

“It is assessed that the warning shot fired by ISAF troops following escalation of force procedures ricocheted into the cabin of the vehicle of the local national male,” said the military statement.

An intelligence official was killed in Kandahar by motorcyclists near his house on Monday evening.

A police officer at the Kandahar police headquarters said the intelligence official was on his way home when he came under attack from armed motorcyclists.

This is the third incident of targeted killing by motorcyclists in the city of Kandahar in less than a month.

A top female police officer and a senior government official were gunned down in such a fashion.
