George Garratt, of Glastonbury, Somerset, changed his name “for a bit of a laugh” through an online site, Legal Deed Poll Service. Based in Islington, London, the site charged him 10 pounds for issuing a legal name-change certificate which it claims is accepted by the British government.

Captain Fantastic, a music student, told The Independent that he chose the theme of superheroes for his name.

“My family have begun to expect these sort of things from me and although my friends thought it was ridiculous most people do call me Captain and it’s been a great conversation starter.”

His name beats the Guinness Book of Records’ longest personal name registered on a birth certificate by 24 letters. The current record holder is named Rhoshandiatellyneshiaunneveshenk Koyaanisquatsiuth Williams, with 57 letters. There is no information if Guinness officials have noted the new record.

Talking of personal names, a fun records website, Stumblerz, says a German immigrant to Philadelphia in the US has the longest given name: Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quiney Randolph Sherman Uncas William Xerxes Yancy Zeus Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorft Senior.

That is just his first and middle names. His last name runs into 10 lines. It is not in any record book, though.
