Berlin : German President Horst Koehler congratulated Senator Barack Obama on his landmark triumph in the US presidential election.
“You are facing major challenges for your country and for the world as a whole. You can rely on Germany as a reliable partner and long-time friend,” Koehler was quoted as saying in an official statement made public Wednesday.
Germany and the US are linked tightly by common values, he added.
“This is also the basis for close cooperation in our transatlantic community,” Koehler said.
Obama won a historic US presidential election Tuesday night, becoming the first African-American ever to lead the United States.
