Sanjeev Kumar, sub-inspector of the Chandigarh police, was arrested Friday by CBI officials. They also arrested Subhash Kataria, a trader, for his alleged involvement in the crime. Kataria was also sent to police custody.

The CBI’s lawyer submitted a compact disc containing the recording of the questioning in the court of judge Jagdeep Jain.

Supporters of Sanjeev Kumar, in-charge of Sector 17 police post at the main plaza of the city’s commercial hub, gathered in big number outside the court premises to oppose his arrest.

They raised slogans against the CBI and demanded the police officer’s immediate release.

“Sanjeev Kumar is known for his honesty and integrity in the whole area. He is innocent and somebody is hatching a conspiracy against him. We are with him and will try our level best to prove his innocence,” said Bobby Singh, president of shopkeepers’ association, Sector 22, Chandigarh.

The CBI team accused Kumar of taking sides in a property dispute over a shop in Sector 17 and alleged that the official was caught red handed accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000 from one party.
