“We have declared a war on terror and the general message is that terrorists have no place in Islam. Our religion does not preach violence. Time has come for all of us to be vigilant and wage a war on terror,” Hilal Qasimi, head of the Islampur Madrassa (religious seminary), told IANS.

The fatwa was issued at an anti-terror convention organised by the Burha Masjid Committee, one of the oldest mosques in Guwahati.

Speakers from all faiths pledged to fight terror and said such conventions would go a long way in fighting terror.

“This is a step forward in the right direction and we want many more such conventions across Assam,” G.M. Srivastava, director general of home guards and civil defence, told the convention.

Speakers asked the Muslim community to be vigilant against terrorists, and to especially keep an eye on madrassas.

After the wave of bombings in Assam that killed 83 people and wounded 300 on Oct 30, the police picked up for questioning close to a dozen people suspected to be involved in the terror strike.
