Nagpur : India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni lauded his fast bowlers for the 2-0 Test series victory over Australia here Monday.
Dhoni said that his pacers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, who troubled the Australians with reverse swing, bowled with a lot of heart on the placid tracks that had little for the fast bowlers.
“Fast bowlers did the trick for us in the series. They did not have much to do on these wicket. They bowled their hearts out and were well backed by the spinners and part time bowlers,” Dhoni said during the prize distribution ceremony.
India won the last Test here by 172 runs at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) and won back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after four years.
Dhoni also complimented openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir – who sat out of the fourth Test with a ban – for giving an ideal start.
“Much depends on the start a team gets. Gautam and Sehwag run well and go for the boundaries which helped to put a big score on the board.”
The India skipper felt the team stuck to its plan to win the series.
“It doesn’t matter whether people say we are the best team or not or whether we have won or lost the previous match. In every match, one has to start from the scratch. It is important that we carry the momentum in the game. During the series we had the motivation, we had the plans and most importantly we executed those plans well.”
The series also saw the exit of two great cricketers – Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble. Dhoni said their shoes would be too large to fill for the youngsters.
“They were marvellous cricketers. They have scored for India, they have led India. We grew up seeing them play and never thought we would be able to share the same dressing room. The youngsters will have a tough task in filling in their shoes. But they should play to their potential and should concentrate on doing their best,” he said.
