Mumbai : The Bombay High Court Tuesday granted a week’s extension to A.N. Roy to continue as Maharashtra’s director general of police (DGP) till Nov 18.
A division bench conmprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S.A. Bobde also permitted the state to file its reply to a 250-page affidavit filed by Maharashtra Police Welfare and Housing Corporation Managing Director S.S. Virk, pertaining to charges of corruption levelled against him by the state.
Roy’s appointement had come under a cloud when the Director General of Home Guards and Civil Defence S. Chakravarthy had moved the Central Administrative Tribunal, challenging the state’s decision.
Upholding Chakravarthy’s contentions, the CAT Oct 8 had set aside Roy’s appointment as “illegal” and observed that the state was bound to consider the three other contenders for the post of DGP.
Soon afterwards, the CAT order was challenged in the Bombay High Court by Roy and the state.
State Advocate General Ravi Kadam submitted before the court that the state had Monday affected transfers of both Chakravarthy and State Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) J.D. Veerkar to each other’s present posts.
Roy’s lawyer also sought the court’s permission to extend his term till the next hearing as his tenure as DGP ended Tuesday.
Earlier, the CAT had permitted Roy to remain as DGP till Nov 6. After he and the state approached the high court, it had extended his tenure till Nov 11.
