New Delhi : Leading Delhi-based contemporary artist Manish Pushkale will exhibit six of his new works at a show in Miami sharing space with British master Damien Hirst.
The show of the “Beyond the Body” will coincide with the Miami Art Fair Dec 3-7.
To be hosted by the prestigious Helene Lamarque gallery, the show will also feature two senior artists from India, Akbar Padamsee, Bose Krishamachari, India-born Anish Kapoor and Paris-based Anju Chaudhuri and Debesh Goswami. It will open Dec 1 in Miami’s Wynwood Art district. Miami is the gallery’s first location outside France.
The exhibition will also feature Chinese artist Movana Chen, Afghani artist Barmak Akram, Portuguese artist Jose De Guimaraes and French artist Francois-Xavier Fagniez.
Thirty-five-year-old Pushkale, an abstract painter, has veered from his usual style to fuse diverse elements like photorealism and abstractions – which are both figurative and surreal at the same time – in his Miami collection.
The colourful canvases that use realism as background and abstractions as surface highlights have been inspired by terrorism and the devastation caused by bomb blasts.
“I saw images of scattered body parts on television and decided to use them as concepts. My art was influenced by the socio-political chaos but it is not a narration of the socio-political reality,” Pushkale told IANS in the capital.
The central motifs of the multi-layered canvases are human organs – liver, intestines and the heart – painted in fluid colours on realistic backgrounds.
“I have been experimenting with body concept art since 1991 but this is the first time, I am showing them. The six canvases for Miami are different from my earlier ones because they start from where my previous paintings stopped. They take off from a realistic base. I have named the series, ‘Museum of Memory’,” said Pushkale, a native of Bhopal.
The artist is also preparing for his solo show in Venice in June to coincide with Venice Biennale (art fair). “I am collaborating with Italian display facility, Gallery Bugno. I will present a whole new body of work for the Venice show,” Pushkale said.
