The Wednesday meeting, an initiative of the Saudi King, is seen among the diplomatic circles as an effort on the part of Saudi Arabia to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the problems of the region – Afghanistan and Pakistan – specially that of terrorism.

Diplomats familiar with the crucial trilateral meeting told IANS that the meeting was “very fruitful” and “constructive”, though not many details were immediately forthcoming.

All three leaders were in New York Wednesday to participate in the inter faith meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Said to be the first of its kind meeting between the leaders of the three countries, diplomats said this reflects the growing interest of Saudi Arabia in South Asia and also a desire of the Saudi King to use his good relationship with both the countries to bring peace in the region.

Recently, Saudi Arabia had hosted the first of its kind peace talks between the representatives of the Taliban and the Afghan government.
