Dubai : In yet another boost to the role of women in the judiciary here, the United Arab Emirates has appointed its first woman marriage registrar.
Fatima Saeed Obeid Al Awani, 33, who has been appointed as marriage registrar or ‘mazoun’ in the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), is the second woman in the Arab world to be appointed to such a post.
Only Egypt had a woman mazoun until now.
Al Awani is a graduate in Islamic law and a mother of two.
Her appointment comes after two women were appointed as prosecutors in the ADJD, followed by the appointment of Kholoud Al Dhahir as the first woman judge in the UAE.
