Melbourne : Former captain Steve Waugh feels there is room for both the all-rounders Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson in the Australian team for the series against New Zealand.
The return of Symonds to the Test side has led to suggestions that Watson, despite a decent outing in India, would be forced to make way for him.
“It’s a difficult choice. But Watson did very well (in India) and he might come in as a third quick. I think Australia would like to have both the players in the team if they can,” Waugh was quoted as saying in The Australian.
Australian team officials also said both players were expected to be included for the Test which starts in Queensland Thursday.
Waugh, however, said Australians should not expect miracles from Symonds, who is coming back after recuperating from a mental trauma.
Symonds is averaging just over 13 this year at state level and some might argue his form is not good enough to be in the side.
Waugh says Symonds was rushed back into the team.
“I think they need him back in the side, his spirit back in the side, the way he carries himself and his enthusiasm,” the former captain said.
“We don’t want to expect miracles straight away in Brisbane, I think it will take him a couple of games to get back into it.”
