Baghdad : Iraq has the right to call off the Iraqi-US pact should local authorities be in full control of the situation on the ground, Iraqi government spokesman Ali Al-Dabbagh said.
Disclosing further details of the security pact with Washington signed Sunday, he said that
the US side enjoys the same right.
Al-Dabbagh said that such a move corresponds with President-elect Barack Obama’s prospect regarding full withdrawal of US troops from Iraq even before the deadline set on Dec 31, 2011.
Regarding Iraq’s foreign funds, the spokesman said that the pact clearly stipulated that the US side was obliged to legally secure the funds and ensure that they are not subjected to international hold-ups or claims.
Iraq is pursuing to come up with a ruling to release the country from the UN’s Chabter-7 and cancel the then head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq Paul Bremer’s order on the matter, Al-Dabbagh said.
As for Iraqis detained by the US forces, Al-Dabbagh said that according to the pact, all of those detainees would be fully handled by the Iraqi judicial authority after all documents were received.
The Iraqi government earlier Sunday approved the security agreement with Washington and sent the document to parliament for ratification.
Al-Dabbagh reported a majority of votes in favour of the signing of the amended agreement with a vote result of 27 ayes out of 28 votes cast in an extraordinary cabinet session.
The agreement, according to Al-Dabbagh, also stated that all mentioned dates in the pact were not negotiable.
