Tehran : President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s letter to US President-elect Barack Obama contained important points which well answered expectations of the global community and international opinion, said a senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said at a seminar on ‘Human Rights in Iran and the World’ Sunday that Ahmadinejad’s initiative in sending the letter neutralised the charge that US politicians have raised against Iran for years, alleging that the country is a warmonger.
As for the establishment of a US interest section in Iran, Hosseini said: “If the request comes from official channels in the US, Iranian officials will follow it up.”
He said that the materialisation of Obama’s pledges will improve the US position in international relations.
The former Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Obama should use the opportunity to improve US image which was harmed during eight years of George W. Bush’s presidency.
“Obama should use the chance to regulate Iran’s relations with other countries,” he added.
He noted that the assassination of political figures in the early years of the Islamic Revolution, support for anti-revolutionary terrorist groups, the eight-year imposed war, support for former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and the attack on Tabas are all signs the US does not abide by international norms.
“As long as the US fails to follow norms free from a totally instrumental attitude, the law cannot address Iran-US relations,” he added.
