Zalmai Ayubi, spokesman for Kandahar provincial government told reporters the incident occurred at around 11.30 a.m. (0700 GMT) when a suicide bomber with explosive material strapped onto his body walked into the compound and tried to break through the security ring at the gate.

“Police stopped and fired at the bomber when he detonated his explosive belt leaving three people, two policemen and one civilian, dead,” Ayubi said. “Two policemen were wounded in the blast,” he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Taliban insurgents are known to have mounted numerous suicide attacks on Afghan government interest and foreign troops stationed in the country fighting the insurgents.
