Chennai : Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan met AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha here Wednesday evening, leading to speculation of a possible tie-up.
Decisions regarding any electoral alliance would be taken after high-level meetings within the CPI and with the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) later this month, Bardhan told reporters later.
The CPI parted ways with Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance earlier this year along with CPI-M soon after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) won the vote of confidence in New Delhi July 22.
Since then, the two main Left parties have ruled out any truck with political outfits that have direct or indirect alliances with either the Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Jayalalitha had been part of a national ‘third front’ that disintegrated earlier this year.
