Five killed in Peru road accident

Lima : Five people were killed and 17 injured Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash involving a bus and two trucks on a highway in the northern Peruvian province of Ancash, Spain’s EFE reported.

The accident occurred on the Panamerica Norte highway, some 394 km north of Lima, when one of the trucks first collided with a bus coming from the opposite direction, and a second truck that was travelling on the highway also crashed into the collided vehicles.

Three drivers and two bus passengers were killed in the accident, the report said.

The injured were rushed to hospitals, the police said.

According to an official estimate, 391 people have died and 2,777 injured in road accidents across Peru in the first half of 2008. Last year, 800 people have been killed and 5,000 injured in road incidents in the country.
