Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the series of attacks as “outrageous” and said the UK government would give all necessary help to Britons caught up in the violence.

“I have sent a message to Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help. Urgent action is under way to offer every possible protection to British citizens in the region,” Brown said.

At least one Briton was reportedly among foreigners killed in the attacks, which were apparently targeted against Westerners, but this was not immediately confirmed by the Foreign Office. At least seven Britons were among those wounded.

Britons were said to have barricaded themselves in their rooms after gunmen stormed two luxury hotels, reportedly looking for US and UK nationals.

Brown pledged that the attacks would be met with a “vigorous response”.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the attacks were a terrible reminder of the threat from violent extremists.

“The UK and India will continue their joint efforts to counter the actions of terrorists,” he said.

Opposition Conservative leader David Cameron condemned the “terrible loss of life” while Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said nations must unite to fight the threat of terrorism.
