Ahmedabad : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urgently convene a meeting of all the chief ministers to evolve an appropriate strategy to ensure internal security of the country and tackle the threat posed by terrorism.
Modi also demanded an urgent meeting of the Indian Navy and Coast Guards chiefs with the state chief ministers of the states on the west coast to draft out a special strategy for the internal security of the coastal states.
“Last night’s terror attack in Mumbai is an affront to our faith and humanitarian ethos. What is needed is political will and a national resolve so that internal security of the nation is not compromised with”, Modi said in a letter to the prime minister.
He noted it was the first time sea routes have been explored by the terrorists. “Terror purveyors are targeting the economic strength and economic hubs of the nation. Considering the seriousness and graveness of the crisis, a battle strategy needs to be chalked out to face the proxy war”, he told the Prime Minister.
Modi’s appeal comes in the backdrop of massive terror strike in Mumbai Wednesday night that have so far left more than 100 dead and almost 300 wounded.
Condemning the Mumbai attacks, Modi reiterated that to avoid damage to internal security of the nation, “resolute political will and national resolve” is needed. Both the central and security agencies of all states must sit together for chalking out a strategy to ensure that the agenda to achieve the internal security goals are defined.
All the democratic countries, including America, have considered the terrorism as a universal crisis and it therefore requires strong legal backing in the form of stringent laws, Modi reminded the PM.
There is also urgent need to impart modern training to the police and armed forces, upgradation of technologies, to cultivate the right mindset among the common man, the press and media so as to define a right policy in the war against terror and adopt best practices to tackle the ever growing threat, Modi wrote in his letter.
