While AIDS-related mortality is low in the island, and mother-to-child transmission is negligible, the epidemic shows a sustained growth, mainly among the male population, NAPC chief Rosaida Ochoa told journalists on Thursday.

The Cuban capital has the largest number of AIDS/HIV patients, she added.

There are currently nearly 9,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Cuba, with 3,000 getting antiretroviral therapy, in line with international standards, said Manuel Hernandez, an official of the NAPC.

At least 1,150 new cases have been detected till date this year and over 1.7 million diagnostic tests done, Hernandez said.
