New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) Six months after the UK introduced a new point-based system for migration from India, a committee of British parliamentarians will arrive here Friday to conduct an inquiry on its implementation.
India was the first country where the UK introduced the point-based system from April 1, which classified migrants into five tiers.
While tier I for highly skilled migrants has been started in February this year, the categories for skilled migrants (tier II) and temporary workers (tier V) will be introduced from November. The students category at tier IV will begin in the first half of 2009.
A statement issued by the British High Commission said there were no plans for opening tier III for low skilled workers.
On June 5, the home affairs select committee, chaired by Indian-origin MP Keith Vaz, launched an enquiry into the implementation of the point-based system.
During its three-day visit, the delegation will meet ministers and government officials, as well as key stakeholders, including businesses and individual visa applicants.
