At a news conference in Sulaimaniya, Northern Iraq, Abul Gheit said the aim of his visit to Iraq was to establish genuine and strong relations between Egypt and Iraq.

“We stand by Iraq and extend all possible support to it. We are seeing Iraq being liberated from this difficult tragic situation it has been exposed to for decades.”

He said it was time that Egyptian-Iraqi relations return to normal pace.

Abul Gheit met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, vice-presidents Adel Abdulmahdi and Tareq Al-Hashimi, deputy prime minister Barham Saleh, foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari and other officials.

He said they have discussed the development of political, economic, commercial, security and oil cooperation.

Vice-president Abdulmahdi said both sides discussed possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU), visits of Egyptian businessmen to Iraq, in addition to security and oil collaboration.

Egypt appointed Ihab Sharif as its Ambassador in Baghdad following the 2003 war of liberating Iraq. But he was killed two years later.
