On a day he announced his retirement from international cricket in Bangalore, Ganguly confirmed media reports that the family indeed received threats to kidnap his only daughter.

“It is true, but it would be better if we don’t discuss it here, ” he said at a press conference in Bangalore. The former India skipper refused to divulge any more details on the issue.

Top Criminal Investigation Department sources in Kolkata also confirmed the family has received two threat letters that Sana would be kidnapped for a Rs.20 million ransom.

Both the missives were addressed to the cricketer’s danseuse-wife Dona.

The first letter, sent a month back, was hand-delivered when Ganguly was away from home, while the second one was received 10-11 days back through speed-post.

“The second one was sent from the Esplanade post office. And after receiving this, the family approached us,” said Additional Director General of CID Bhupinder Singh.

The CID was probing the source of the letters, and looking at all the angles, he said.

The state government of West Bengal has provided high-level security to Ganguly since 2002 following threats by unidentified militants.
