Khalifa Bin Zayed Mosque in Jerusalem set to become Islamic landmark

Jerusalem : Mohammed Rahal–The Khalifa bin Zayed Mosque, which will overlook suburbs of Jerusalem, is set to be another Islamic landmark in Jerusalem after Al Aqsa Mosque when completed.

The mosque is financed and supervised over by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity foundation. About 70 per cent of over 3km sq mosque being constructed at Al Aizariya town, opposite Al Aqsa Mosque from Eastern Jerusalem, is now complete.

Sheikh Azam Al Khateeb Al Tamimi, director of Jerusalem Awqaf, told Emirates News Agency (WAM) in an interview that “this is the Arab-Muslim project next to Al Aqsa Mosque in terms of size.

It is great evidence that Arabs and Muslims take Jerusalem seriously to safeguard its Islamic legacy and identity”.

Essam Faraon, head of local council at Al Aizariya town, said “this UAE project is the biggest project conducted by the UAE in Palestine and Jerusalem”.

Towfiq Arar, contractor of the project, said that capacity of the mosque will be 5, 000 persons. It will include Islamic library, Quran memorisation centre, women prayer site and there are plans that floor ground will be commercial centre, whose revenues will go for the mosque and payment of the guards.
