Palestinian president arrives in Colombo on two-day visit

Colombo : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived here Thursday on a two-day visit, his first to the island nation, during which two crucial agreements are expected to be signed.

Abbas was warmly welcomed by his Sri Lankan counterpart, Mahinda Rajapaksa on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport and presented a guard of honour by the Sri Lankan Air Force.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malik accompanied Abbas on the state visit.

The Palestinian president will hold talks with President Rajapaksa and several ministers on issues of bilateral interest.

The two countries are expected to ink two crucial agreements on technical cooperation and practical training.

He is also scheduled to hold talks with leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremesinghe, during his two-day stay here, before leaving for Syria.

Heavy security arrangements are in place in and around Colombo in view of the visit.
