The complaint, filed at the Calangute police station, says that Rohit Monserrate repeatedly sent the 14-year-old girl vulgar text messages, causing her mental harassment.

Already under intense media spotlight after 65-year-old Australian John Kelly’s murder on the eve of the revenue-generating tourist season, the Goa police confirmed a complaint has been received.

“The Calangute police station received a complaint from the 14-year-old’s mother and we have started an enquiry into it by a deputy superintendent of police,” Superintendent of Police (North) Bosco George told IANS.

The enquiry would be completed in three days, he added.

Asked to comment, Monserrate claimed that his son would never indulge in such activities. “If there is a complaint, let the law take its own course. I am open for investigation,” he told reporters late Friday evening.

When IANS contacted the complainant at her home in North Goa, she refused to comment on the issue.

Monseratte’s induction into the Goa cabinet had raised a lot of eyebrows as he was one of the main accused in a mob assault on the state capital’s only police station at Panaji. The mob had ransacked the police station and had assaulted several police personnel.
