Beirut : Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora said that despite recent Syrian military buildup along Lebanese borders, it is “not possible” for Syria to send troops to Lebanon, local Daily Star reported Friday.
Seniora made the remarks while speaking to reporters late Thursday after his meeting with Lebanese president Michel Suleiman.
“Some are speaking about Syrian military intervention in Lebanon, this is not possible in my opinion,” Seniora told the reporters.
Seniora’s comments came as Lebanese pro-government leaders have expressed fears due to a recent Syrian deployment of around 10,000troops along its borders with Lebanon.
Asked when Beirut and Damascus would exchange ambassadors, Seniora said that Lebanon had taken the necessary measure and Syria still had to take some measures for its part.
Lebanese President Suleiman and his Syrian counter part Bashar Assad agreed during a summit earlier last summer to exchange diplomatic relations between the two countries, which would be for the first time since the two country’s independence.
