Acting district magistrate Surendra Singh planted a Neem sapling in Sonu’s memory at the now closed borewell at the village Tuesday evening.

After giving a cheque of Rs.100,000 to Sonu’s parents, Singh announced that the community pond and the area surrounding it will be beautified and named Sonu Smriti Jalashya.

Sonu’s body was recovered by rescue workers more than 96 hours after he fell into the open borewell while playing near his home at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Following his death, Jal Nigam engineers were suspended and were charged with causing death due to negligence along with the contractor who was responsible for the digging of the borewell. The state government also ordered that all borewells be immediately covered.

Singh said by Tuesday evening he had received certificates from all the block development officers (BDOs) that proper measures had been taken to cover all borewells.
