Phnom Penh : Thai and Cambodian troops started to exchange gunfire right before 2:30 p.m. local time (0730 GMT) Wednesday at the border area, and the fighting still continues now, a Cambodian border official at the scene told Xinhua by phone.
The fighting has turned the months-long military face off over territorial dispute there into direct armed confrontation.
Earlier Wednesday, Cambodia said that some 500 Thai troops had arrived at a patch of land near the ancient Preah Vihear Temple.
