Cairo : Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed AbulGheit on Thursday welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations between Syria and Lebanon.
“This is a step in the right direction,” Abul Gheit said in a press release, expressing Egypt’s satisfaction to the establishment of the Lebanese-Syrian diplomatic ties.
Now it’s important for the two countries to take more steps, among which border demarcation is the most important one, to boost institutional relations based on mutual respect of sovereignty of each other, said Abul Gheit.
Lebanon and Syria on Wednesday signed a document on the establishment of first ever diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries, one day after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree to start the diplomatic ties.
Syria and Lebanon have not established diplomatic relations since their independence from the French colonial rule in the 1940s. Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005 after three decades of military and political presence.
